Verity Newman MA

Artist’s statement Born 1974 in Peterborough, UK, my background is in sculpture and contemporary crafts, but my practice now mainly comprises of mixed media and painting. I have drawings in UCS’s East Contemporary Art Collection and make time for my work around teaching at a local sixth form college. Much of my work aims to capture memories, journeys, rituals and sense of place in the surrounding landscape, recreating a kind of 'imagined place' or past. I am fascinated by unnoticed architectural structures and macro details, which instigate the lines, forms and silhouettes in my drawings, paintings, photos, prints, collages, book forms, installations and sculptures. Recent work has shifted towards a more immediate, two-dimensional way of working, with a focus on achieving balance, spatial awareness and composition, where colour and form are prominent. These quite expressive, abstract and often more impulsive pieces carry the fading traces of architectural structures and domestic objects that feature within my immediate environment, hinting at the symbolic connection many of us have to our personal possessions and the spaces they inhabit. Perhaps through my work I can evoke how a gradual sense of purpose and tranquility might emerge from a state of nervous energy and uncertainty.
